May 1, today, and besides of celebrating the beginning of Spring with the knot of the flowers wreath, we celebrate Worker’s Day.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Worker’s Day, as a labor celebration, was established on July 20, 1889, during the founding conference of the International Socialists in Paris, in memory of the uprising of US workers in Chicago on May 1, 1886, when they claimed the eighth working day as well as better working conditions. The struggles in the end resulted in a bloodshed by the intervention of the police and also by authorized henchmen from parts of the employers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In Greece, the first celebration of Worker’s Day was held in 1893 in Athens. It all started at the initiative of the Central Socialists Association of Stavros Kallergis. May 1st was Saturday and was a business day. So, Sunday May 2 was chosen to make the celebration more massive. According to the newspaper “Socialist”, published by Kallergis, more than 2,000 socialists and workers were gathered in the stadium on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Each year since then, on May 1, we celebrate the struggles of workers who have fought for better working conditions and rights.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
